Most Americans consider Memorial Day weekend the official beginning of summer. However, for many Americans, especially the senior community, this day signifies something much more than beach trips and cookouts. For many seniors, this day is about reflecting on the memory of soldiers who’ve fallen during service. Here at Bay Cove Assisted Living and Memory Care, we respect the fact that this is an especially significant holiday for our residents. That’s why we’ve compiled a respectful, but fun, list of activities to honor and observe Memorial Day with your aging loved one.
Senior Activities For Memorial Day Weekend:
Wear your red, white, and blue – A perfect way to show your love for the USA!
Create patriotic pinwheels or other crafts – Spend the day remembering our Veterans by making Memorial Day themed crafts.
Go out on a Memorial Day picnic – Pack up a red, white, and blue themed meal, sit out on the bayou and soak up some sun.
Participate in the “National Moment of Remembrance” – Take a moment and pause at 3P.M. on Memorial Day to reflect upon the true meaning of the day.
Visit your local Veterans Memorial – Show your gratitude by placing flowers or American flags at these memorials. New Orleans has many monuments dedicated to the memory of fallen soldiers, like The Vietnam War Memorial or Veterans Memorial Square.
Write a letter to active service men and women – Take a moment to thank them for their service. There are tons of organizations that will send letters and care packages to those currently deployed.
Memorial Day is almost here. This senior-friendly list hopefully gives your family ideas on how to observe and celebrate this special day. We recognize that many senior Veterans now reside in assisted living facilities. That’s why our team at Bay Cove goes above and beyond to serve those who have served our country. From all of us here, have a safe and happy Memorial Day weekend!
